I teach AP Environmental Science at my school, and my goal is to bring lots of hands-on lab experience to my students. This year, we completed a 2 month-long project called "Ecocolumns," in which students created models of an ecosystem on a small scale. I want to create an improved set-up for my students to access next year! This project is awesome because students get the opportunity to customize their ecosystem, and take data on plant growth, soil quality, and water quality. This provides a base of knowledge that we can refer back to for the entire year.
Ecocolumns provide students with valuable scientific skills such as analyzing data, proposing environmental solutions, and creating scientific experiments.
My students loved this project because they were able to practice hands-on lab work and collaborate with a group in order to identify successes and problem-solve when they ran into challenges. They consistently refer to Ecocolumns as "the best lab of the year!" This shelving and grow lights will help with organization of our Ecocolumns and improved plant growth as my classroom doesn't have windows for access to natural sunlight. Our Environmental Science program is growing, and I want to be able to bring this project to my students in the fall! Thank you for your consideration!
