The mission of our School, which is a diverse learning community, is to develop in students an understanding of and appreciation for the career and leadership opportunities that are available to them in the many fields of agriculture. It is also our commitment to cultivating each student's individual abilities to prepare him or her for a lifetime of productive academic, vocational and civic endeavors.
Student success should not be determined by zip code.
My students come from all over the city to learn real skills that will be applicable to the careers they are passionate about. Because of our school's location near the outskirts of the city, students must travel up to an hour and a half by bus and train to get to school. This demonstrates their dedication and resiliency. We believe in harnessing students’ own strengths, interests, and passion to shape their educational experience and set them on a path towards post-secondary and career readiness. All students are registered FFA members. We offer students a unique experience and hope that with your help we can make all aspects of their school experience memorable and impactful.
Students are working with Philadelphia's Insectarium to create three large, interactive, educational, and living sculptures that focus on the benefits of predatory insects. We are focusing on insects that can be used to kill pests instead of using harsh pesticides and the importance of knowing what plants can go in your garden to support the health and safety of other plants. The students are going to be working with all students in our school to complete a research project and engage the community in what they are seeking to accomplish. These structures will be extremely large and will be interactive and educational. They will have living components and be a monument on our school grounds for years and years to come.
In order to make sure our project looks beautiful and professional, we need rust proof spray paint and seeds.
Everything else needed for building will be gathered by the students. We have been collecting soda cans, plastic bottles, cans, wire, and scraps of wood and supplies from around our school. This serves not only to clean up our school, but re-purpose these materials that would otherwise fill a landfill. The students have picked out a variety of spray paint colors that will ensure that the flowers and bugs they have designed will be a source of pride for the school community and add a pop of color to our campus. The seeds are all from plants that are great at scaring away pets and support the research project that the students are completing along with the construction of the sculpture.
