My Students

Thanks to Disney Family Videos and their amazing teaching tutorials and a little "Imagineering" of my own...I have found a totally unique way to teach my students how a butterfly eats - In a way they will never forget! Now I just need a little help bringing the lesson to life.

The goal I have set for my Early Childhood Special Education program is to fuse STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), Early Childhood Education, and play.

I teach 2-5 year old children with special needs in a close knit military community in VA. I refuse to allow my students to be defined by their disabilities. I use my experience as an educator to find my students strengths and unique interests and build on them, creating a cornerstone to launch academic success.

My Project

In this lesson we will do an art activity to illustrate the concept of how a butterfly eats. We will use plastic cups with a straw inserted through a flower. The children will tape the flower over the top of the cup to cover the opening. They will make the flowers and drink through the flowers to get a sense of how butterflies drink nectar. The straw represents the long proboscis that butterflies have in their mouths and use to drink the nectar of flowers. To add the dimension of dramatic play my students will actually be dressed like butterflies in these amazing butterfly wings I found online. What better way to learn than imagining you are butterfly drinking the nectar from the flower!

Let my students imaginations take flight while they explore the beauty of nature and teach them how butterflies eat in a way they will never forget.

Help science come to life in my classroom this spring.
