This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Books and reading are one of my favorite things. I became a librarian to instill the love of reading in students. Many of the students tell me they love coming to the library and getting books. It is important that they are able to read and comprehend the books they check out.
Research shows that if a student is not reading on grade level by third grade, they have a harder time with academic success going forward.
These level 1 and 2 readers are great for students who are learning to read. The level 1 readers are perfect for preschool and kindergarten students. They have easy words, picture clues, rhyme and rhythm. The level 2 readers are good for kindergarten through second grade students. These are short stories that build upon the level 1 readers and have short sentences with basic vocabulary.
North Star is a Title 1 school. Only 40% of the third graders are reading on grade level, and currently 43% of the second graders are struggling readers. My library has a small collection of level 1 and 2 readers. Having more of them in the library will give these students access to books that will enable them to become better stronger readers. Getting these students reading on grade level will have a huge positive impact on their future academic success. These books will also assist in helping kindergarten and first graders to be on grade level as they move to higher grades.
