The students I teach are brilliant in their own individual ways! Some of them are limited in their experiences but certainly know how to make the most of the environments handed to them. Each one of them looks at their teacher like a hero. This makes their teacher choose words and actions carefully as I am a pillar in their lives.
It is truly eye opening to see the progress each child makes in a year.
Along with this, community in the classroom is created. Students are taught through daily interactions to accept and care for each other. It is this closeness that allows them to realize the good in the world.
We have recently experienced Hurricane Harvey in South Texas. For many students this has brought complete devastation to homes and incomes of family members. School is a place these students find peace in not so peaceful times. Making the environment inviting and accommodating for my students is a goal I am constantly working on.
My Project
We need an easel to help build community. It will help students with stations as well as small reading groups. We will use magnetic letters to make words as well as anchor charts to use as resources around the classroom.
Several students in my class were displaced due to the hurricane.
They find comfort in the classroom setting. Creating an inviting space that is engaging on many levels allows students to escape the environment in which they live that might not be as comfortable.
Having an easel will help students to work closer in groups. Students have more opportunities to engage in their learning in a smaller setting. Teaching using an easel allows students to help in creating resources they will use for the rest of the school year.
