This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach enthusiastic fourth graders at a high poverty school in Arizona. Students from diverse cultural backgrounds enrich our learning environment.

My classroom is a caring community that encourages risk-taking and critical thinking.

Students regularly work together in collaborative learning stations throughout the school day. They learn through inquiry, discussion, and activities aligned and differentiated to their abilities and interests.

I seek to provide funding for resources to support the continued academic and social growth of my fourth graders. My students deserve the best!

My Project

My fourth graders are enthusiastic readers! They love coming to our small group table to learn comprehension strategies in guided reading groups each day.

I am requesting a small group teaching easel to enhance instruction during my literacy block.

I will use the whiteboard on the easel to instruct students in the difference between the six major nonfiction text structures: description, sequence, cause & effect, compare & contrast, and problem & solution. This easel is the perfect size for my group table and contains a handy pocket on the back for holding supplies or task cards related to our daily learning objectives.

I am also requesting nonfiction reading folder centers, which contain engaging information related to teaching students about the six major text structures. For example, students will learn about problem and solution by analyzing the inventions of Thomas Edison. They will compare and contrast ancient Egyptian pyramids to the Louvre in Paris and consider cause and effect relationships among various animal adaptations by reading and discussing the text on the file folder cards.

Furthermore, the folders contain brightly colored pictures and photographs of the content, which support students' interest and understanding of the topics. The teacher guide contains ideas for lessons, graphic organizers, and assessments that will ensure positive learning outcomes for a variety of diverse learners.
