My students need a bookcase and a variety of children's books, such as Shiloh, Hundred Dresses, and Volcanoes to read during Literature Circles, DEAR time, and to complete research.
In our "Field of Dreams" is where our ideas and imaginations run wild. A great book always inspires a child's heart. However, I am a first year teacher and do not have the resources others have. I want my children to be given the same opportunity and variety of texts to read to grab their attention.
My students are a diverse group of International Baccalaureate learners.
Among them, I have many creative thinkers, confident risk-takers, and reflective communicators. My students attend a school that is different than all the others in our county. Our school enables students to be inquirers. My students develop their natural curiosity through hands-on activities, cooperative learning groups, and differentiated instruction. Our class is often told that they are the best out of all the 5th grades. Mostly, because of their wonderful attitudes, respect for others, and eagerness to learn. I have never encountered a group of children who have the drive and commitment to learn something new every day. I drive from over an hour away just to teach my students every day. They knew from day one that I would always be dedicated to teaching them and helping them grow. My students know what it truly means to be caring and open-minded. We inspire each other every day to be the best that we can be.
My Project
The variety of children's literature you will be providing my classroom will truly inspire them to read every day more and more. Books like Shiloh, Charlotte's Web, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and Bridge to Terabithia will always have them hooked during DEAR time. A plethora of books will enable them to reach their goal of reading 7 books each nine weeks. This will enable them to complete the GPS standard of reading 25 books by the end of fifth grade. Also, reference materials like the Britannica Student Atlas 2010, New Thinking About Pollution, and TIME For Kids Weekly magazines, will help my students understand more clearly how to find information according to the sources we are using and in turn, it will make it easier for them to do research. Also, books like Hundred Dresses, Volcanoes, Out of the Dust, and Belle Prater's enable my classroom to be enriched with wonderful read alouds and literature circle groups. I want to instill a love for reading in their hearts.
The impact that you will have on my classroom is enormous.
I don't want my students to ever have to say that they have read every book on my bookshelf, or that they can't find anything that interests them, just because I am a first year teacher. I've spent hundreds of dollars already just to put fifty books on my shelf. I can't help but want to give them more because they deserve it. They deserve the opportunity to be inspired and make connections to their every day lives through reading.
