My Project

My students are from the valley, an area known for rock quarries. Most have never been more than 30 miles from here. My classroom came with almost nothing but a whiteboard. As you can see from our classroom picture, we are starting from scratch. I have managed to pull together basic school supplies. However, the science materials just aren't there.

The Earth is a big place with lots of exciting phenomena just waiting to be discovered.

The items on my list will give students hands-on experience and allow them to do field work as they explore. Energy, resources, the air we breathe, the solar system, and the stars in the sky are all a part of this exciting science. Help me bring it alive to them with activities and models that will engage and inspire them.

Starting from a big-picture perspective, we will examine the model of the solar system to understand the patterns we see in the sky. We will use the globe, maps, and models to understand the solid earth. We will go outside and learn how the Earth’s magnetic pull can be used to navigate with compasses. Turning to the air and water, the thermometers will be used in a variety of experiments to learn about convection and energy. We will look at climate change and renewable energy sources with the analyzing kits. The tangrams and fossils will be used in incomplete puzzle labs to help students develop an idea of how science updates ideas with new pieces of information.

Through these activities, I hope students will develop a passion for science and our connection to the Earth. We only have this planet, and everyone should have a chance to learn about our home.
