Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help My Students Write History! My 8th grade social studies students will be writing history by using Earth Capsule to enter their messages for the future to be stored in locations all around the world. My students will be able to write a message that they can place in 5 locations around the world for preservation. I want them to participate in a project that demonstrates that their voices — their thoughts and opinions - are not meaningless but have an impact on other people and possibly on how the future will see our times and understand our culture. In this project, we will discuss the relevance of current affairs to students' lives and use the concept of the time capsule to show them that history is made of real people who had real lives. I then want my students to create messages which will express what's important to them. We will discuss their individual entries in class and then these messages will be saved by Earth Capsule for 50 years so that when these young adults are in their 60s they will be able to look back on what they thought about the world 50 years before. I particularly like the idea that this assignment will have some application beyond the world of our classroom. This project is a great opportunity for my students to think about the past and the future, and also to consider our world as a ‘global village' in which cultures are intertwined. I hope that this project will help make the study of culture and history more relevant to their lives in a more exciting and dynamic way.
