My Students

Now that we have spent an entire school year developing our writing program, our students need the materials to fully participate in their writing and literacy education. We have spent this first year with minimal supplies, but now that the students are invested, we are going to need more.

My students attend a high poverty, inner-city school where literacy development initiatives are on the rise.

From the beginning of this past year (2011-2012), when we started the focused writing program, I have seen tremendous growth from my students, and a genuine interest and investment in their writing.

My Project

My students will be so excited to receive these materials. First of all, the scissors and tape will be used for "story surgery" where students get to really revise their writing without handwriting it too many times. They get to cut their paper and reassemble it to make it the very best it can be. Trust me, the kids go crazy over this activity, especially when I say "Dr. So-and-so is getting ready to operate!" The staplers will be much appreciated so they can stop pounding my almost dead stapler just to fasten their papers together. Finally, because I push-in to classrooms on a cart, the writing center will really allow us to stay organized and efficient with our procedures. All of these materials will contribute to my students' continually growing love for writing. These supplies will also allow the students to work even more independently as they will not have to wait to share supplies.

Having seen my students grow in their ability and willingness to write, I would hate to have to continue to limit them on the accessibility of supplies to get the advantageous benefit from this focused writing instruction.
