This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a school counselor in a middle and high school that serves the students of Springfield, Massachusetts.

Springfield Public Schools is a large school district with approximately 25,000 students.

Hispanic students make up 66.6%, African Americans make up 18.9%, Caucasians make up 10.2%, with Native American, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and others making up the remainder of our student body.

Of our student body, 23.5% are students with disabilities, 76.7% are economically disadvantaged, 83.2% are high needs, 17.3% are English language learners, and 29.1% speak another language first other than English.

My Project

My colleagues and I work with children in our school's Social, Emotional, Behavioral Support (SEBS) Program. All of the students in our program have IEPs and can struggle with one or more of these issues during the school day.

All of our students work through their day with point sheets which allow both our staff and the students to track their progress throughout the day and over time.

At the end of the day, the students are assigned a level which helps everyone keep track of their progress over time.

The students really enjoy earning various things based on their earned levels, whether it be free time, computer time, privileges within school, and many times they just want a yummy snack.

This project will allow us to provide snacks on occasion to our students if they choose that as an earned privilege following a good day/week at school!
