Earn, Spend, Save and Share: Kindergartners Learning About Financial Literacy
Help me give my students piggy banks, classroom store items and a book about sharing your money with others, so they can learn about earning, spending, saving and sharing money.
Students in my kindergarten classroom come to school excited about learning. Most of my students come from low-income families, and all the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch. This background can mean that students’ families cannot afford to purchase needed school supplies. Unfortunately, some of the students are experiencing homelessness which can mean that they lack items to meet their most basic needs.
My students deserve to receive the best education possible so that they are able to succeed in school and in life.
These boys and girls have such awesome attitudes, and they try their best every day!
My Project
Each spring, my kindergarten students participate in a financial literacy unit. They are introduced to the basic principles of earning, spending, saving and sharing money. Students listen to financial literacy read aloud books, participate in dramatic play involving earning money and use financial literacy games to practice handling money.
During our unit, I would like my students to participate in an activity that allows them to have a real life experience involving earning, spending, saving and sharing real money.
While learning about earning money, my students will earn real pennies for doing various tasks. They will also brainstorm ways that they can earn money at home. I have requested piggy banks that the students will each decorate. They will store their pennies in their banks.
After learning about spending and saving money, they will come up with a budget detailing how much money they will spend and how much they will save. Before students are given the chance to spend their money, we will read "The Street Where the Dollar Tree Grew." This book introduces the idea of sharing a portion of your money with others. We will discuss our school wide initiative called "Pennies for Paws." Throughout the year, students donate pennies to our penny drive. At the end of the year, all of the students in our school vote to decide which area animal charity will receive all of the pennies. My students will amend their budgets to include how much of their earned money will be donated to the penny drive. I have requested a dog bank where students will deposit their contributions.
Finally, students will use their "spending money" to purchase prize items from our "class store." Students will take home their banks, savings, budgets and ideas for earning, spending, saving and sharing money.
