Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our inner-city school is comprised of over 900 students in grades 6-8. More than 33% of our students are bi-lingual in nature. The majority of our students receive free lunch. My students have come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful. Their challenges go beyond the educational setting. We look to inspire our students to chase their dreams. Each student hopes to improve through mind, spirit, and body. Although, my students face many obstacles, I have always felt that my gymnasium classroom has been a sports sanctuary. Students feel at home and look forward to each class period.

My Project

Students are encouraged to come early to school for an exercise program where they can walk, jog, or run at their own pace. Students use popsicle sticks to record their individual laps, which I translate into miles. I then map out the collective "miles" to see how far we have gone. I also follow up with some information about each city we have reached along the map. Our goal is to go from NJ to Disneyland in California.

We need pedometers and storage for them to track their fitness goals.

In addition to supporting a healthy lifestyle, this program integrates mathematics and social studies. Pedometers in place of popsicle sticks would make a great difference for this program.
