Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in East Oakland where funding is limited and students need the most! Our community is underserved but needs hands-on and engaging experiences to supplement their learning.
Our community is loving, hard working, and dedicated.
Families care about their children's education and do what they can to help their children and our community. Even though our neighborhood can sometimes feel unsafe, our school community works hard to make school a safe and welcoming place. Our school is under resourced. However, what our school lacks in materials and personnel we make up for by working together and working twice as hard to make it work.
My Project
Students in our apple group are ready to dive into chapter books. However, because we are a bilingual classroom we do not have many early reader chapter books in Spanish besides Magic Treehouse which are too intimidating for my starting readers. (We'll be passing those on to second grade.) We will be using these books to read during our literacy time.
The Pedro, Sofia, and Yasmin series books are a great scaffold into chapter books and are fantastic because the characters in these books are diverse and look like my students.
I can't wait for my students to fall in love with these books and flourish as readers.
