I am currently teaching kindergarten at Emerson School in Berkeley. We have a diverse population with regards to cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Acquiring solid reading skills has been a major focal point in our curriculum development.
Each year, the students enter with a huge span of academic skills. Some students recognize all the letters of the alphabet and can read simple sentences, while others are unable to recognize their names.
As a veteran teacher (16 years), I understand the need to make literacy activities enjoyable and meaningful. Kindergartners learn by seeing and doing. I am requesting a variety of hands-on literacy resources to be used directly by the students. Many of the materials will be used to solidify alphabet knowledge (names, sounds, etc.) and help develop early reading skills. The materials will be used by every member of the class (20 students).
Strong literacy skills are needed for students to build upon as they move through their academic careers. Much research has been written on the importance of early literacy experiences. My goal is to provide my students with a rich variety of literacy based activities.
