Thank you for providing them for me! Your generosity has had a meaningful and immediate impact on my K-5 students. Through this curriculum and its accompanying books and activities, I have learned concrete, student-friendly ways to break down complex social and emotional concepts so my students can better access them. \r\nFor example, one powerful change has been learning to intentionally \"pause\" and give students time to reflect before moving into instruction. We begin lessons by reviewing our \"group plan,\" which helps students understand expectations and feel more prepared to participate. When there are conflicts, students have shared language to identify whether a problem is small, medium, or big, and to reflect on whether their reaction matches the size of the problem. They are also learning that everyone has thoughts and feelings—and that others' thoughts and feelings may be different from their own.\r\n\r\nAll of my students benefit from the direct and explicit instruction from this curriculum. Rather than say something is \"wrong,\" or \"rude,\" which can make a student shut down. We talk instead about \"expected\" versus \"unexpected\" behaviors. This is just one example of shared vocabulary and it has been transformative. It allows us to address behavior in a calm, respectful, and instructional way rather than a reactive one.\r\n\r\nThank you for making it possible to serve my students in a way where they feel understood, supported, and empowered to grow socially and emotionally. I feel that having these games has opened doors and just last week, we had a break through! With my most striving we work on Phonemic awareness, letter sounds and letter recognition every day. For example, we play with rhymes. When we sing \"Down by the Bay.\" I show my students pictures of a goat riding a \"boat,\" a snake eating \"cake,\" and a fly wearing a \"tie,\" etc. We use the rhyming dominoes to match pictures that rhyme. Everything is so much clearer with a picture. With the elkonin boxes, my students can see the whole (e.g. a picture of a cat) and the three boxes to guide them of the first sound, the medial sound, and the ending sound. Soon (I hope), they will be able to write the letters that correspond to the sounds. All these skills cannot be taken for granted and are directly connected with learning how to read and write. With the alphabet cards, my students are successfully matching upper case letters with lower case letters. This was not the case a few weeks ago. There are so many things that need to taught and retaught and when a child is engaged, willing to try, okay with making a mistake and motived to fix it, we have all won. The pens motivate my kids to correct their errors. The pens that we can refill have been the best. After I give a pen to a student, I tell them to let me know when the ink runs out and that I can only replace the ink if they have the pen! If you were to visit you would see students wearing noise reduction headphones, sitting on the wiggle seats, squeezing fidgets, using the sand timers, and reading softly with the whisper phones. Not only that, we can lend materials to other classes. Each year the needs can be surprisingly different. Teachers have borrowed phonics phones, wobbly cushions, and headphones. I can not emphasize enough how grateful we are to have our own copies of the books to preview and plan with. Our task was to fill out a graphic organizer comparing two of the books. Having the books to refer to made the task happily doable. In the 5th grade, we are reading \"Seedfolks\" where each chapter is told by a different person in the community. In 5th grade we are teaching the students to back up their thinking with evidence. Having copies of the book to refer to is essential in this work. With the students' pictures, I added some empty thought bubbles which helped some of my youngest students to grasp this concept. I also overheard my colleague teaching one of her students about compound sentences. I was able to quickly print a helpful resource (the \"FANBOYS\") and some exercises which helped the student successfully understand what a compound sentences are and how to construct them.
