Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book all by yourself? Many of my students are experiencing this for the first time. Lack of exposure to literature has hindered many of my under-privileged students from reaching their grade level reading development.
In my classroom there is a big buzz over learning to read for many students.
Some of my students are reading on or slightly below grade level but fair too many are significantly below level. As we discuss reading and its importance I find that many do not have books they can read at home and rarely visit their neighborhood library. However, there is such an eagerness to learn to read by so many. Many of my students come from single working parent homes where it seems that reading development is left up to the school and the child. However, beginning readers need support as they maneuver through books.
My request for updating my listening center equipment is to replace a broken tape machine. Unfortunately, ours broke this year and because it was a tape recorder it limited our ability to order more books on tape because so many companies are using CDs. With this equipment I can continue to help develop listening comprehension, reading fluency, proper pacing, and expression. Even when I'm working in my guided reading groups, several of my students can listen and follow along to books in our listening center. Using books on tape/CD helps those students develop a confidence as they follow literature they may not be able to handle on their own.
Having a updated listening center allows students to continue to experience the joy of literature in a fun way.
As they listen, discuss, and respond to each story students embrace their place in our ever-changing learning community.
