In my fifth grade classroom you will see books lining the shelves; the pages bent and worn from fingers still learning how to handle the knowledge held between the two covers. You'll see students absorbed in these books, exploring the worlds within.
I teach in a Title I school.
This means that a majority of my students are classified as low income. These students have a passion for learning, but not the resources. They have a desire to grow and become intellects in this modern world, but not the support systems they so desperately need. These students come to me with a need - the need to be cared for, the need for a safe place, the need for a community which will support their goals and dreams.
My school is the one stable center in their lives. At my school, we truly put the student first. I work with an amazing team of educators and administrators that will go to every length to make the difference for each individual student.
My Project
In my classroom we love books. From the first day, I explain to my students, many of which have never owned their very own book, that they will learn to be 'real readers' by using real literature and books! We spend a lot of time pouring over the pages of our classroom library, deep in thought or conversation about the books we're reading.
While this sounds like a sanctuary, with all the excitement it can become rather chaotic in our small room crammed with 22 fifth graders and their eager teacher. These earmuffs will provide a quiet atmosphere, allowing students to really get lost in the books they're reading. Several of my students have sensory sensitivity and any talking while they're reading is disruptive. These earmuffs are the key to providing them a safe, secure environment in which to explore these literary worlds.
Reading is the number one thing a student can do to improve their academic lives.
These earmuffs fill a large need in our classroom for students needing the quiet, tranquil environment necessary for deep reading. These students will be given the opportunity to develop themselves as learners using these earmuffs and getting lost in the world of words.
