Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Christopher School in San Jose, CA has a population of 80% Hispanic English Language Learners. Most of our 600 students are on the free or reduced lunch program. I am the teacher in charge of our After-school Homework Center Program. We need books! Reading is required for daily homework, including weekends. Most of our families either don't have transportation or have only one car, so going to the library is difficult. It would be great to have enough books to start a checkout system for our kids. They love to read. We have an Accelerated Reader program in place and the kids are excited about "earning" a sticker, bookmark, or pencil for reading. We recently had a presenter come from San Jose State University to speak to our parents and community about the importance of our children attending college. She stirred up so much excitement! These young families are now looking ahead expecting a promising future. One that they didn't think was possible. Consequently, our children have quite a different attitude toward learning and reading. It's just been great! Please help me provide much needed books, book bags, and prizes to encourage growth at Christopher School.
