Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Read Critically. Think Rationally. Communicate Effectively. This was the goal I set before my students when we met each other on the first day of school. We chant it on a regular basis to remind us of how high we are reaching as high school freshmen.
My students are a vivacious bunch of teenagers.
They are itching for a challenge and are already beginning to rise to the ones I have placed in front of them in our English classroom. They want this challenge because each one of them has committed to college preparation as their number one priority by attending a college preparatory, charter school in Texas.
My Project
The magazines from The New York Times will be a transformational addition to my classroom and to the lives of my students. We will use these magazines to read about current hot topics, debate our opinions, and question why certain things happen in our world. They won't have to read from a printed black and white copy from the Internet, but they will have their own color magazine with vivid pictures and glossy pages to motivate them to keep reading the compelling content.
My students will learn how to read with an open mind, think outside of their community and write with style and finesse.
When I imagine my students a year from now after having read 14 issues of this magazine, I cannot help but get excited.
They will leave my classroom one step closer to becoming well-rounded and well-read citizens of the world. Ultimately, they will leave having developed their own identity and beliefs from the experiences created by these magazines.
