This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. I ask them, "Who is the best First grade class in the whole world?" and they reply, "We are!" I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything.
My students are all latinos eager to learn through literacy and rich vocabulary opportunities in order to increase their language acquisition.
My class are composed of 11 English Language Learners and 10 students with disabilities. I teach at a Title I Brooklyn school where 98% percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. .
My students come from a low-social economic status and have limited resources. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
My Project
We need books to help children grow as learners. We have limited resources and need to support our children in their earnest desire to know more about the world around them. We have chosen book series like Elephant and Piggie and Froggy and Toad so the first grade children have opportunities to continue to develop their interest in reading and love of literacy.
These books will allow my students to continue to grow as readers and gain knowledge as they continue their education.
In addition, it will provide them with many opportunities to travel the world of reading through literacy.
I am a special education teacher in a 1st grade ICT classroom in Bushwick, Brooklyn. It consists of 21 amazing students who love reading. My students change books every week in our library. Unfortunately, our classroom library is small. It breaks my heart to see a small library that limits their passion for reading. My job as a teacher is to instill the love for reading and give them many opportunities. Despite our small library, I encourage them to reread the books we have.
As you can see, my students are eager to learn and get inspired from books. In order to move up in reading levels, they must also practice at home and the lack of books in our library enables them to take many books home. They love reading, but do not have enough books that are at their level or they enjoy both in school or at home. Please help me create a lending library where I can provide my students with the needed materials to succeed.
