With the new supplies, our classroom was transformed into a hands-on science lab where students could observe the complete life cycle of butterflies up close. We were able to purchase caterpillar kits, magnifying lenses, observation journals that helped bring abstract concepts to life in a tangible and exciting way.\r\n\r\nStudents who had only read about metamorphosis in textbooks were now able to witness it firsthand. They carefully recorded daily observations, asked thoughtful questions, and developed a deeper understanding of life cycles, habitats, and the importance of caring for living things. The project also sparked curiosity and excitement about science — even among students who had previously been hesitant to participate.\r\n\r\nBeyond the science content, the experience nurtured empathy, responsibility, and teamwork as students worked together to care for the caterpillars and celebrate the release of the butterflies. The materials made this learning journey possible and turned an ordinary science unit into an unforgettable, real-world experience.\r\n\r\nThanks to the generosity of Donors Choose supporters, our students gained not only knowledge but also a sense of wonder and connection to the natural world.","fullyFundedDate":1747827105493,"projectUrl":"project/butterfly-research/9320915/","projectTitle":"Butterfly Research","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Pangbourne","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6699111_orig.jpg?crop=2448,2448,x380,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1572397038806","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6699111"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_785","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":349,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":95,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"10.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":67.9,"schoolId":785,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 86 Irvington on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 86 Irvington","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-86-irvington/785"}
