My Students
Unfortunately in South Carolina, we are still have a high number of new cases which will make the start of school most likely be online or a mix of e-learning with some in person learning. Our district is making sure that students have computers to do e-learning with, but I want to make sure they have other materials needed to learn and be successful.
With the uncertainties of this upcoming school year, I worry about my students missing out on things they would normally have and experience in my classroom.
The students that I will have for the upcoming year come from different ethnic and economic backgrounds. My class will be made up of students that receive free or reduced price lunch, students that receive Response To Intervention assistance with reading, students that receive special education services in reading and math, and students that have qualified for our gifted and talented program. No matter what, we will be a family!
My Project
With e-learning and computer activities, it is difficult to let kids experience math skills through hands-on experiences. In order for students to truly learn and understand math skills, they have to be able to connect to them.
Giving students the basic materials needed to have some hands-on experiences is crucial.
One material that will benefit students is having dice. Dice can be used to make learning place value, addition/subtraction, and multiplication facts more fun and interesting. They can also be used to involve parents and siblings in learning activities with them. Another item that can be used in many areas is a protractor. It can be used to measure and draw angles in geometry as well as a ruler for measurement. In order to make sure that students have the materials to do the hand written work involved in all areas of math, they need to have pencils and paper as well.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
