Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are primarily Latinx students from low-income families (our school is Title I, free and reduced lunch for ALL students).

This AP Language and Composition class is full of highly-motivated, ambitious, creative, analytical thinkers who have an eye toward universities and colleges, and nearly ALL of them would be the first in their family to attend.

These students are already facing challenges like homelessness, being in foster care, in counseling for emotional trauma, lack of housing or food security, one parent in jail or deported, oh, and being a teenager, which was hard enough for most of us! They shouldn't have to also face the challenge of an under-funded program.

My Project

Rows and rows of seats - lockstep like robots. We need to MOVE!

The district-provided institutional desk-chair combos are heavy, unwieldy, obstruct movement around the groups, and many of them are broken or missing parts because they're over 20 years old.

Students need practice working in a variety of groups with a variety of partners. I constantly ask my students to work with a partner ("think-pair-share"), then to have partner pairs combine ("pair-squared"), or to rotate through groups. This is so hard to do with our current, broken-down furniture!

Please help my students have the most dynamic learning environment where we can quickly change our furniture arrangement to match our learning purpose.
