DVDs Support English Learners

My students need DVDs which can be played at individual computer stations and in the classroom to support the curriculum, reinforce concepts and help aid comprehension.

My Students

When was the last time you popped a VHS tape into your VCR? Or have you, like many moved on to DVDs? Many of our classrooms don't have a VCR, they've been replaced by DVD players, but our library's collection hasn't changed. This is why we desperately need to convert our video collection to DVD.

As the Media Specialist for the entire school, my classroom/media center sees all, nearly 900, Pre-K through 5th grade students.

A large percentage of our students come from low income families where driving to the public library across the city is simply not possible. For many, our school library is the only source accessible to bring media home. Because many of our students speak a language other than English as their first language, they need the extra visual support DVDs can provide.

My Project

Educational, curriculum related DVDs will provide students a better foundation for understanding what is being taught in the classroom. Students who lack the prior knowledge, or vocabulary of a subject, can be "front loaded" with information by allowing them to view a DVD at either an individual computer station in the classroom, media center, or as a whole class. Teachers will be able to incorporate the DVDs into their lesson plans to augment the curriculum, and support struggling students. All subject areas; math, science, history, literature, writing, music, and even physical education, can be greatly enhanced by the incorporation of a hand selected collection of media and DVDs in the curriculum. A small donation can make a large impact to many in our school. Being awarded the Chevron Classroom Challenge cash grant could bring our school's media center's media into the 21st century!

Students who are struggling readers, or for whom English is a second language often tune out of lessons when they aren't comprehending.

DVDs can hook those same kids into a lesson because of the visual support it lends the subject. Funding school libraries hasn't been a priority, and older formats like VHS, have not been updated to keep up with the technology. Our media center, and the students and teachers who use its resources will benefit greatly by updating the outdated video format.
