This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Being a product of the Chicago Public School district, I know the struggles students are faced with daily. Despite the circumstances surrounding them, they always rise up. I am teaching a diverse group of students in a Dual Language classroom. My classroom follows the 70:30 language allocation model. 70% of the class is taught in Spanish and 30% of the class is taught in English. The goal is billiteracy. The majority of my students come from a low-income household but strive for success in and out of the classroom.

My Project

Second grade is a meaningful year in a student’s academic timeline. During this time, students begin to learn and understand the fundamentals of literature that will help guide them along their academic journey in preparation for their following years of school. In a dual language classroom, it is essential to maintain a diverse library to help reach all students. Having a variety of reading options will not only engage students in their reading, but also the possibility to explore other texts outside of the classroom. Access to these books will open the door to endless possibilities by establishing a foundation to developing their reading skills in efforts to become successful in and out of the classroom.
