This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse, multi-ethnic group of eager learners, in East Harlem, NYC. This is the first, middle school, art class for many of my economically disadvantaged students. I am a new teacher at this inner city school, and my students are just beginning to realize their talents and tremendous potential as young artists. Their focus and discipline has already improved, which I know from experience, will carry over into their academic subjects. Special needs and ESL students have been mainstreamed into my general ed classes, and art is a wonderful opportunity for them to gain success and improve their self-esteem. I have high expectations for all my students!

My Project

My students need two drying racks to safely store their wet paintings and prints until they are dry. My visual arts classroom is bare, and we are trying to build up an art program, which includes organization of artworks and materials. I am currently teaching new materials and methods, such as watercolor and printmaking, and we need a place to put the wet artworks while we work. The classroom is small and has limited table and floor space. If we stack them before they are dry, the students' precious artworks will be destroyed. Drying racks will free up floor space and create a more professional and safe environment for students to work on their projects!
