The heart of my classroom is my students. Every day I have the privilege of sneaking a peek into the future by working with future doctors, lawyers, presidents, artists, chefs, and homemakers. I get to work with tomorrows' legends on the baseball, soccer, and football fields, too!
My incredibly talented and smart students are in grades K-2, speak several languages, and represent the diversity in our country.
They speak English, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, German, and Chinese. Some of my students traveled on foot with their parents from different regions in Central America in order to attend school in the United States. I also get to work with students needing literacy intervention and enrichment services.
I see students in 45 minute-1 hour groups during the pull-out intervention and enrichment blocks for RTI (Response-to-Intervention) and ESL classes. I have also started an after-school Drama Club for my students. They love learning to read, engaging in STEM activities, and showing their creativity like many of the famous artists we study. More time spent engaged with enjoyable literacy tasks that are matched to their individual learning needs is key to their academic and personal success.
My Project
Best practices in literacy dictate that students need balanced literacy instruction that includes small group, guided learning opportunities. This requires designated areas of the classroom set up and organized to maximize time for different learning purposes, such as whole group, small group, and individual learning spaces.
This project will help me provide my students an interactive learning space to target their individual and small group learning needs.
This project will purchase a small dry erase kidney table with an adjustable height option to target different student ages that are in my class now and in the future. This will help me create a designated learning space to work with my students on literacy skills with little disruptions caused by student transitions.
