Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A relevant characteristic of my students is that they are motivated to pass unit tests and that promotes one of my classes to geometry in high school. Other relevant characteristics are most of my students have been reclassified and are Title I students.
I heavily rely on collaborative work where students communicate to negotiate ideas and practice academic language.
Additionally, I use computer graphics to give students another perspective on concepts. My students work on problems that involves critical thinking and requires knowledge of various standards, and we practice perseverance and collaborative behaviors. They all crave critical thinking and challenges.
The class time is 100 minutes and we use quick writes and pair-shares to help with motivation and maintaining focus. My students are very likable and loyal. They have a sense of humor and appreciate adult attention. It’s a delightful group to support.
My Project
The class time is 100 minutes. I use non-permanent-vertical-surfaces (NPVS). I used randomized grouping system for my students. They go up to board and work on the proposed problems for about 10-12 minutes. Each student has a marker that differs in color from his partners' marker. This gives me the opportunity to assess each student's work quickly. Students collaborate to solve the proposed problems. When the time is up, they can see the work from the other groups. Sometime we do gallery walks.
We use this strategy 2 or 3 times per class (depending on the standard and on the objective of the day).
The graph paper will change the quality of the graphs. Often we have to graph without using graphing utilities, and to have an accurate and precise graph, students need to use graph paper.
We use AVID strategies to take notes. Some of my students use their notebooks during the semester, and there is always a need for a new notebook.
