Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Music programs reach the "un-reachable" student. I teach K-5 general music in an inner-city school. This is a high-need community and many programs are being cut. Our district has made a commitment to keep teaching the fine arts in our school. However, there is no money to add to our program. We have started a program by Jim Solomon called "D.R.U.M" Discipline, Respect, and Unity through Music. This facilitates the building of teamwork, and gives a practical application to our school wide expectations: be respectful, be responsible, be a learner, be safe, and be golden (the golden rule). This is a program for our general music classes as well as for a before school program which meets twice a week. As you can see, we currently have three drums. Your generous gift will help us get closer to improving our program so that everyone can play at the same time.

Many students find that music touches them in ways that other subjects do not. In order to teach students reading and math, some kids need to find the emotional connection. There is an inherent need to belong to something bigger than themselves.

Drum groups provide a place to belong. They provide a place to go and a something to do besides "hang out" on the streets. They provide excitement, build teamwork, discipline, and give them the emotional connection to learning about life that they cannot find in other areas.

If students come to a drum program and spend most of their time looking at the others playing drums, they will loose interest. My goal is to get all of my students on a drum so that we do not have to rotate players. Help me keep kids off the streets and into to classroom. Help me keep kids' interest in music intense so that we do not loose them.
