If I could shout it from the rooftops, I WOULD! This year we have had a lot of students really struggling with processing their emotions and verbalizing their needs. Having snacks on hand seems like such a small thing but has been incredibly helpful. When a kiddo gets stuck or isn't ready to process their big feelings, I'll just grab them a snack and let them set in the funk for a minute and then they're usually able to open up shortly after. We have a few who have experienced homelessness this year so being able to provide support to them by way of snacks and comforting items here in my office has been wonderful. Having age-appropriate books that cover a wide variety of SEL topics, plus their companion workbooks, has allowed me to use my time with students more efficiently because I'm not having to spend time finding activities that are appropriate or sorting through a bunch of out-dated resources to find things that are applicable. \r\n\r\nThe items from this project have allowed me to expand the ways in which I can reach kids here who maybe done want to open up. Through the use of books and their activity workbooks, kids don't feel pressure to find the right words. They can point to an image in the book, or draw how they're feeling, etc. Students who come to school hungry or don't know where their next meal is coming from, can find relief in knowing they can always come see me to get a snack. The A Kids Books About ... and A Little Spot Of ... books have helped navigate some tough conversations.\r\n\r\nHaving the workbooks for anger and grief have also allowed students to describe what is going on in their mind when they don't when the words to say it but they can instead grab a pencil and write it. \r\n\r\nGiving kids appropriate language to name their thoughts and feelings has had such a huge impact on their lives and the work I've been able to do with them this school year.
