Drumming Our Way to Fitness

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are from an urban city in North Carolina. The majority of my students come from low socioeconomic families. Our school gives our students a safe environment to learn and flourish.

Physical education is one of their favorite classes because it is a place where they can exercise their body and mind through various team-building activities.

My students rarely get new experiences outside of school. I'm hoping to be able to change that this year with my project.

My Project

My vision for using the desired materials is to incorporate music and instruments to encourage physical fitness. Not all students enjoy sports, so I am attempting a different opportunity to bring fitness into their lives. The stability balls will be used as the "drum" and the students will use their drumsticks to play.

Getting this equipment will allow each student an opportunity to have their own ball and set of sticks to be able to fully participate in each class.

Typically students have to share equipment, which cuts back on their activity time.

Along with getting students active and being used as stress relief, this equipment will also be used to incorporate math concepts. With lower grades, the desired materials will help with counting skills such as skip counting to match the beat of the drum. Upper grades can use the materials to teach and reinforce fraction strategies. There are many benefits to fitness drumming that would bring a positive outcome for my students and school.
