Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is in the historic city, Alexandria, VA. We are a Pre-K through 5th grade, Title I elementary school, and we also host several city-wide special education programs. The building is filled with dedicated educators, wonderful administrators, and some of the best students in the world.
My students are spirited, creative, and passionate learners.
They come from countries around the world and speak many languages, but when they enter our school, they are all family. Music is a universal language that everyone can learn and enjoy. My goal is to provide them a nurturing environment where they learn to take risks, challenge themselves, and work cooperatively with their classmates.
My Project
As much as my students enjoy singing, moving, and composing, what they love best is to play instruments! While my classroom is equipped with small hand percussion instruments like egg shakers and rhythm sticks, we need large, authentic instruments to provide students with a wider variety of sounds, skills, and experiences.
Tubano drums have been specially designed for classrooms by master music educators and master drummers from West Africa.
Drums like these provide students with the opportunity to explore music from around the world. Tubanos can be played with hands or sticks, and many curriculum resources are available to help integrate the whole world of music into the school classroom. The 12-inch, medium tubano is the heart of a drumming ensemble; ideally there should be more medium drums than any other size. This drum will help move our drum ensemble toward the appropriate balance between small, medium, and large instruments. With an international student body, our students deserve instruments of the highest quality representing their backgrounds. Students from Pre-K to 5th grade enjoy learning with these wonderful drums!
