My students need tubano drums to experience the joys of community drumming. The synergy, cooperation, and joy they experience while drumming together spills over into all areas of their educational and social lives.

My Students

We have a great mix of students at our school. We are situated by a prison and have subsidized housing in our boundaries. We also have great big family neighborhoods where doctors and lawyers live.

Our parents are involved and our students come to school excited to learn.

Our area is growing quickly. Last year, we had five kindergarten sessions. This year we have nine! We have over one thousand students at our school and as the music specialist, I see them all every week!

My Project

These drums give children a voice, connection, and power! The kids drum the rhythm of a question and a friend drums the answer. We listen to each other and then echo or answer back with another rhythm. We compose together, we drum different rhythms at the same time, and we play drumming games. The community building that happens during drumming is magical!

Students learn much more than musical skills through drumming.

They express themselves, they connect with others, they engage in community, they respond to signals from others, they take turns leading the group. They learn coordination, careful listening, executive function, self control, steady beat, and complex rhythms! But if you ask them, they have no idea they are learning so much. They just know the joy they feel as we chant, laugh, sing, and drum together!
