This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Each year REPMS band begins its musical education journey with a deep focus on rhythmic integrity by diving into steady beat keeping, subdivision, and rhythmic notation through drumming and body percussion. Although the students play all instruments from Flute to Saxophone to Tuba, putting the rhythm literally into their hands with drum sticks brings a Dalcroze-inspired pedagogy to our class and grounds students rhythmic development through motion by drumming. However, our school's inventory of drumming materials and does not match the number of students.

The drum circles, ostinati improvisations, and creative rhythmic compositions these drum pads can bring are all aspects of the class that will expand and heighten students' abilities and interest in music.

Many of our students show a natural affinity toward rhythm, dancing, beat making, and free style rapping. Drumming directly links their intrinsic cultural and musical taste to the school's music curriculum. With these drum pads, units focused on beat making, rap music, and composition become a possibility. Transferring what was only plausible for us in a digital space through apps such as Soundtrap, into a physical one through drumming (and eventually drumline!)

Ultimately, a class set of drum pads allows for robust engagement as our band dives into the world of rhythm. It shifts the lessons from conceptual division of time to physical movement based activities that directly links students' interests in music and students' culture to the curriculum. With your help, our band can obtain our goal of getting drum pads to achieve rhythmic excellence!
