Drum Fun In The Sun!

My students need 5 medium bongos, 5 large bongos, and 10 African Djembe drums to participate in and help facilitate the African drumming lessons in music class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach elementary music to students in grades pre-kinder through sixth at a Title 1 public school in the largest urban school district in the state of Alaska. My school is a very old building that sits in the middle of a neighborhood that is seeing more and more violence every day. About 25% of the students are of Hispanic descent, another 25% are African American, 13% are Hmong, about 15% of the students are Native (Alaskan) American and the remaining 20% of the students are white. This is a very diverse school where most of the students receive free lunch.

Although my classroom may appear to have a lot of instruments, most are in desperate need of repair. Recently, a touring Afro-Cuban music group came and did a special presentation at one of our school assemblies and the students were so intrigued and motivated to learn more about Afro-Cuban drumming. Unfortunately, the few hand drums that are available in my classroom do not quite fit the style or meet the needs for that type of music. I would love to be able to provide them with the opportunity to learn correctly how play on the instruments needed, Djembes and bongos, to create that kind of music. I would also want to take it a step further, and plan an outside performance for them to play for our neighborhood during a spring evening. Since we are in Alaska, the sun doesn't set until around 10 PM in the springtime. How fun it will be for them to drum in the sun!

I am asking for a very small donation: 5 medium bongos, 5 large bongos and 10 Djembes. These instruments would be used in all grade levels by all students that come to music. When that touring music group performed at my school, it was, for many students at my school, the first time they had seen and heard that type of music being performed. I would love to be able to give my students the opportunity to CREATE that kind of music themselves! I believe that by having those instruments in my classroom, more outlets for performances would come about for my students to show off yet other talents they possess. There is so much talent at this school, I can only imagine the kind of music they will make!

You will make it possible for my students to perform a style of music that they otherwise would not know. Your help will also ensure that my students are exposed to a wide range of music styles like Afro Cuban music. Your help will also create more outlets for performances for my students to show off their musical and rhythmic talents. Not only will they be able to perform, but they will also be able to use those instruments to help improvise rhythms and create accompaniments to songs we are working on in the music classroom. The benefits of your generosity are endless!
