Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When kids discover that reading is fun, they set themselves on a course to become life-long learners. So I was heartbroken when some of my ninth graders told me they have not finished a book since elementary school. I have selected a wish list of high-interest books tailored to their interests.
I teach a highly motivated, ethnically diverse group of ninth graders in an urban public school in New York.
Many of them speak English as a second language, and many are designated as special ed.
Most of them qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Few of them spend much time reading on their own at home. That's why our Drop Everything and Read program is so important! It provides students with three hours a week to read a book of their choice in school. They can also sign books out to take home and return.
My Project
Overall, the goal is for students to read what appeals to them, because that's when they become "lost" in their reading. Fortunately, students seem to enjoy reading books that refer to the topics they're learning in class.
This summer I used my own money to purchase graphic novels for our heroes unit. They were a huge hit, but now students have read them all! In addition to more graphic novels, students also requested more "scary" and action-packed books. I have also selected several memoirs to supplement an upcoming memoir unit.
The gap in at-home reading is one of the biggest causes of the achievement gap.
Students who read on their own for enjoyment know thousands more words and more complex sentence structures than students who don't. This is one of the major obstacles my students have to overcome. And yet I see every day that they love reading when the right books are in their hands! Please help me build a classroom library that is appropriately challenging and engaging to support these at-risk readers.
