Drones, the Future of Deliveries

My Project

In our STEM classroom we will explore Newton's Three Laws then apply them to our real-life issue of the delivery of ordered packages. These days ordering online and having packages delivered is becoming more of the norm than going to the brick and mortar store. I plan for students in groups of four (4) to investigate the theory of flight using the American Scientific Edu-Drones.

Students will use the American Scientific Edu-Drones to investigate the theory of flight, then apply that knowledge to our real-life issue of using drones to deliver personal packages.

Given that my goals for this project are for student to analyze data, draw conclusions and think of ideas that will improve their future, students will use data collected to determine if using drones will reduce the environmental impact of door to door delivery of online orders.

American Scientific Edu-Drones bring this project from an abstract thinking activity to a concrete, real-life activity. Without the drones, this activity does not fuel my students' creativity and understanding of our real-life issue of increased driving due to door to door delivery.

This project would benefit all students, but benefits mine more than most. Over 70% of my students are on free or reduced lunch and therefore thinking of drones as a means to reduce pollution of door to door delivery is unique and should spur my students to continue to think "out the box" to solve our real-life issues. It is also known that environmental engineers are less likely to come out of low socioeconomic groups. These two reasons along with the academic reasons are why this project is so important for my students to have an opportunity to experience. All students should be given opportunities to pursue a rich education that is focused on our real-world issues.
