My Students

Teaching at a middle school in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, my students come from a diverse background of families (military, high to low income families). These students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom.

Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences that will not only support the social, emotional learning of each individual but to inspire them in learning about science and the engineering design process.

My Project

At our middle school, a 1 hour advisory is built in the school's schedule to provide teachers and students opportunities to build relationships among each other through character building (SEL), passion projects, and keep communication between home and school.

Through the use of beginner drones, students in my advisory class will focus on the engineering design process to develop an obstacle course to fly their drones.

Students will engage in 21st century skills as they collaborate, problem solve, think outside the box, and document their learning as they take on this challenge outside of the normal science classroom. As a culminating project, students will showcase their classroom obstacle course and fly their drones through the obstacle.

In addition, the use of drones will help make the learning relevant to today's society and students will learn what drones are, how they fly, and what drones are used for in today's society.
