This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many programs, sports and activities have been created over the years to inspire young women; one age old program that still prevails is cheerleading. Cheerleading has become a force that cultivates young powerful women. I want to offer this incredible opportunity to the girls at MBA.

We are a small city public school that serves low socioeconomic, college bound students.

We encourage volunteerism and extra curriculum activities. This philosophy inspired a small group of girls to begin a cheerleading squad. However, due to lack of funding and budgetary constraints we cannot afford uniforms but do not intend to let this stop our girls from having an experience that will help shape their high school experience.

My Project

The whole school is waiting to see these girls perform at the first basketball game. However, a cheerleader isn't a cheerleader without her uniform. A uniform is not only for homogeny, but also is important to portray a message of solidarity that illustrates a common goal to cheer our team to victory and that girls everywhere can do anything they put their minds too.

It is our responsibility as educators to see that school is not just about academics, but a destination where the kids of our future can excel in everything they do.

As a woman, who was a cheerleader, I know firsthand how being a part of a team can help you grow, make great friends, learn about the meaning of team work and girl power. I truly believe my years as a cheerleader, from age six to seventeen, helped me develop into the strong, confident and independent woman I am.
