My junior high school students are friendly, entertaining, inquisitive, and full of life. Their enthusiasm for learning is contagious. I want to keep that zest for life ongoing by providing technology tools to help them achieve their goals.
My seventh and eighth graders love learning and technology.
The 900+ student population has a diverse economic background and a percentage of our students receive free or a reduced price breakfast and lunch. Students spend their free time riding skateboards and hanging out with their friends. On any given day you will see students using their smartphones or tablets not only for listening to music and playing games, but reading books and even writing papers.
My Project
I have been dreaming of transforming my classroom into a cafe-style inspired atmosphere. Many students use the library and computer lab during their snack and lunch breaks to work on projects and assignments. It is refreshing seeing such dedication at such a young age.
Our school district has directed teachers and students to use Google apps such as Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, and Google Classroom for all school work related assignments and research. Google apps provide limitless storage of data using the Cloud and any saved work can be retrieved from a multitude of devices and any given time.
We have a number of students who do not have access to computers at home and must rely on our school to provide access for them. Having the portability of Chromebooks would enable all students a chance to work in a calm and stress-free environment.
If this project is funded, our entire student body and faculty will benefit.
At our school, we try to reach across the curriculum. History, language arts, and science teaches students to do research using Google Docs and Drive. Another example, the math curriculum teaches students graphing data by using Google Sheets, which is a spreadsheet application. Since my class is wireless, students can research and access any topic they are interested in.
