Our school is a Title I school which the majority makeup of our student body is low-income based. Our culturally diverse population of students thrives in our learning environment that promotes relevant rigor, project-based learning, positive/professional relationships, and life/college-ready graduates.
In our Art Room, students have a safe space to thrive, innovate, create, and develop into young artists with tools to apply their traits/talents towards their own personal entrepreneurship and journeys.
In my own experience with these wonderful people, we have celebrated failures as first steps, found our personal voices within our own unique styles, had congressional award winners and celebrated acceptance letters from prestigious Art Schools, state universities, and Ivy Leagues. Within our walls, students have raised money through our own project-based-learning initiative for Special Olympics and their inclusive classmates they work alongside daily. Using collaboration, we have murals that speak motivational quotes from various world languages on touch-based electrical paint mechanics.
My Project
These materials will help give us the tools to paint a mural on our outdoor basketball court. The objective and message is told through the students design and prompt: "What would Martin Luther King Jr's speech be in modern day America?" The rollers will give us mass coverage for areas of lengthy strands of vibrant hues, the spray paint to give a new medium that our students typically cannot use, and the high brush count will give each student a brush so we all can contribute to our collaborated design.
The goal of this project is how we navigate through our creative minds, critical thinking in artistic challenges, ability to communicate ideas/criticisms effectively, and spend time as a class collaborating concepts - it started as a class project, then embraced in our school, and eventually will be shared/celebrated with our community.
We look at this project as not just another visual representation of what our country can be but in actuality, the process and possibilities of classrooms throughout the country; to make grand ideas come to life and make an impact locally, nationally, and globally.
