My Project

I am a 5th grade writing teacher. Several of my students have HATED writing by hand for years. Their resistance to the idea was impressive. They use a lot of speech to text, which is a wonderful resource, but I was concerned about their refusal to doing anything by hand. Even things that normally 5th graders would be interested in doing, they flat out wouldn't even try. As the year went on I came to the realization that it wasn’t the writing that was hard, a lot of it simply had to do with their fine motor skills.

About a month ago I had an ah-ha moment that was a thing of beauty.

It was the ultimate hook for my students that are struggling. It turns out the solution was drawing! What started as a simple idea to motivate one student in my class has turned into a great way to help many of my students. I bought some basic art books, brought supplies from my house, and borrowed some things from our wonderful art teacher. I’d like to continue using this idea long term for this group of students and also future students who are resistant to writing.

Now, here is the best part, it not only worked for students to strengthen those fine motor skills, but, also to strengthen our class community. I now have a group of students that have created a drawing club for recess and are very rarely seen without having a sketch book clutched under their arm. They have built unique friendships and they encouraged and challenge one another to discover new skills. Finally, they are willing to write by hand in my class, as well as their other subjects. What seemed impossible is now achievable.
