My Students

As an elementary art teacher, I have over 400 students I see throughout the week. Many of them are very eager to learn new skills in art, however there are also many of them that have self confidence issues and worry that they will not do well or cannot improve.

My classes are comprised of a wide range of learners and personalities.

I work at a Title 1 school, meaning there is a high percentage of disadvantaged families. Most families qualify for a free or reduced lunch. I have over 400 students, and about 1/3 of them are bilingual students with Spanish as their first language.

My Project

I would love to have a wide variety of drawing books for my classroom, for when students have free time between projects. At the moment I have only a few and they are loved by all age levels. They are starting to deteriorate though as they are used so often.

My students' eyes light up when they see what they are able to draw after following the steps in a drawing book.

They often express how they can't believe they were able to make what they did. They learn to break things down into simple shapes and lines and take things one thing at a time. Often times following the steps in the books is therapeutic for children.

I have seen so many of my students' self confidence rocket upwards when they are able to make a drawing of something they saw in a book. I want to continue making them feel good about their abilities and show them that they can keep improving!
