Dramatic Reading Encourages Fluency

Help me give my students magazines to practice reading informational text, graphs, headings, glossary's and learning new vocabulary. Also, voice amplifiers to help everyone hear their voices during Reader's Theater.

My Students

My second graders are full of energy and enthusiasm. They work very hard to learn. With the impact of Covid, missed days of school as well as students choosing to be homeschooled last year, many students are below their grade level reading targets.

The students will be motivated to read plays together with expression while practice fluency.

Reading the "Reader's Theater" passages again and again will help them gain mastery of reading sight words as well as other text. Some of my students are still reading at a kindergarten level. When we did a Reader's Theater last month I was so amazed at how these students with a limited ability to read were involved and enjoying reading their part. I decided to add this to my curriculum for the benefit of encouraging these slow and reluctant readers.

We plan to enhance the plan by adding a presentation to the parents and other 2nd grade classes. In order to do this we will need voice amplifiers for the students who are reading the parts in the "Reader's Theater".

My Project

The magazines and voice amplifiers will promote fluency and a love of reading. Students will have many opportunities to read a loud using their voice amplifiers allowing everyone to follow along in their magazines or their script for the Reader's Theater. These items are very motivational for the students. They love the color photographs and all the information they learn on a variety of topics. They are able to use the text evidence to find the answers for the questions on the last page. These skills are vital to 2nd grade success and in the upper grades.
