I have fifteen preschool age students in my classroom. My students are a mixed group: three, four, and five year olds. I have my students for two years, prior to them entering Kindergarten. My classroom is general education, however, I do have a few special education/PIRT students.
My students love to role play while supporting each other.
My students love to pretend that they are selling ice cream to their peers. However, I have a limited amount of materials for them to role play this successfully. My students have the choice to go an area during work time. Work time takes place daily and consist of one hour.
My Project
The school district follows the guidelines of ECERS 3, Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale. ECERS 3 requires a secondary theme in the play area: house area. The secondary themes are rotated. I want my children to experience the most, therefore, I change my secondary theme every three to four weeks. I have my students for two years. I try not to repeat my themes within those two years. This becomes costly for me to maintain.
Dramatic play is an integral part of a child's social, emotional and cognitive development.
There are five important aspects of dramatic play: 1. teaches self regulation; 2. gives children an emotional outlet; 3. teaches conflict resolution; 4. supports literacy; 5. allows the teacher to support students and encourage their ideas.
