My students need a market stand to provide structure while they explore imaginative play using pretend food materials. Kitchen supplies and dolls will encourage meaningful role play opportunities.
My preschool special education class includes students from ages 3-5 years old who have a range of abilities. We love to have meaningful play experiences where we explore and learn through our natural environment while in both structured and unstructured activities.
The classroom environment is created to encourage growth through exploration and discovery while developing a love for learning.
For many of my students, it is the first time that they are exposed to school and peers on a regular basis. We learn to participate in our community through cooperation, exploration and meaningful play.
My Project
Our preschool students use dramatic play materials to experiment with social and emotional roles in life. An upgrade to our dramatic play center will allow students to use a variety of materials and discover new interests, preferences, and abilities.
Through play, students will learn to use their language, creativity and pre-academic skills to explore different roles as they engage in the environment around them.
The addition of a market stand and cash register will give us a base to use food and money materials. Students will learn to exchange these materials as well as use them to learn preacademic skills such as sorting, counting and color identification.
The wood food supplies for our kitchen will provide thematic play as we imagine we are cooking in a home and serving guests. Students can make a birthday cake using the mixer and serve it to peers and dolls. The dolls, high chair and stroller will encourage playing the role of a care taker and help to create empathy. The new materials for our dramatic play center will allow students to explore independently while also engaging with peers in a range of pretend play themes.
