Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over the past two years, I have seen many of my students grow to really love reading. They have gone from extremely timid readers to students who can't get enough of books.
Ashanti is one student in particular who has grown enormously in her reading. When I met her at the beginning of 6th grade, she struggled to make meaning out of simple texts. She never gave up, though, and now she is a voracious reader of all types of books. Romances, in particular, are her favorite. Her fluency and expression when she reads make her incredibly fun to listen to when she reads aloud.
It would mean so much to Ashanti and to our whole class to be able to improve our classroom library with these high-interest reading materials.
This project will help my students develop reading and leadership skills. Having books that they enjoy reading and are passionate about will help them improve their reading levels. Many currently read below grade level and getting to read books that they enjoy will help them get the reading practice that they need.
Because this project is student-led, students will also develop leadership skills as they work on coordinating the project. They got to choose the books that we are requesting and took the initiative to describe what they are asking for. They will oversee the library check-out system and talk up the project to our school community. This project is an awesome way for my students to take ownership of an initiative to make our middle school better.
In Their Own Words
The reason it will be a good idea to get new books into the class library is so certain students can enjoy reading more. For example, some students enjoy reading books that have to do with drama and romance. Reading about these things will make students feel active and happy about reading instead of being on their phones on social media. This way they will be doing something good for their brains.
I will bring this project to life by telling parents to donate money to buy books that students enjoy reading. Also, I will make a survey to have students say their choices of what types of books they like to read and why. This way, we can make sure that our classroom library has books that ALL students like to read.
This project will make students become more happy about reading. They will have books to read that they enjoy and want to read instead of having to reading boring books that they don't want to read. Reading good books with drama and romance will be fun and help students become better readers.
