Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the honor to teach at a science-focused high school where my students have the opportunity to attend STEM internships, take AP science classes, and really envision careers in the medical field. However, though science is a love for my students they miss the arts.
Three years ago a group of 3 freshmen approached me and a co-worker to ask us to co-lead a new Drama Club at our school to help quench their thirst for the theater and the arts.
Now, 3 years later, they are seniors, and we have a mixed grade group of amazing students who love the stage and have been a part of producing 2 musicals and have seen over 10 shows.
My students self-identify as game changers and are working hard to reach their goals. Many will be the first in their families to earn a high school diploma, and they enter high school determined to graduate. Additionally, over 90% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. They are scholars, empathetic humans, life-long learners, and fearless when it comes to their education and their goals. They are creatives, fun, curious, and kind.
My Project
I am looking for financial support to bring 20 students, during the second week of school to see Kiss. We will begin with an overview and group discussion about the play, watch the show, and end the night with a discussion about what we saw play out on the stage.
It is so important for youth to have the arts and see the theater; there is nothing more magical than live theater and watching the effect it has on a young person's creativity, goals, and beliefs about themselves and the world around them.
It allows them to envision different outcomes and wrestle with important topics in their lives on the stage.
This school year, we want to visit different theaters around the Bay Area and start the year with Kiss in Berkeley, a play that asks its audience to question perceived reality.
