Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need access to what many other children have. I want them to have choices in reading materials. I want them to have games to play when it's rainy and we stay inside for recess. I want them to know that learning can be fun, exciting, and engaging. People play and learn together.

We are in an isolated area that does not have access to bookstores, or cultural activities.

Many of the parents are busy working long hours. The students are at home without much stimulation. We are a Title One school with 100% free and reduced lunch. These students are hungry for learning. They want to have a book of their own and games to play. They come from many different countries and are learning English as they go. Many are shy and need to sit with others and play games to develop confidence in the language. I want them to feel the excitement of curling up with a book that takes you to a fantasy land in your imagination. I want them to sit across from one another, playing a game and talking. These students have so much potential. I want them to have every opportunity that is available.

My Project

Having a set of books for the students means that they can spend time together reading and discussing the book. It gives them the opportunity to develop their confidence in their ideas, as well as improve their language. It also teaches them how to have conversations with groups of people. All of these skills create experiences and skills that will last them a lifetime. I want them to have games to play during rainy day recesses. I want them to learn how to play and talk. I want them to experience what it's like to sit with a group of friends while you play a simple game. It teaches conversational skills, how to resolve disagreements, how to speak up for yourself.

These books, like Eragon and Tuck, and games will add vibrancy to our classroom.

It will give the students choices. The books will help create fluent readers. Both the books and games will help create students who know how to talk to other people, and enjoy themselves in the world. All help create skills to carry over into life.
